That said, the NFL is making it easier for out of market fans to watch their favorite teams - you no longer need to have a dish to do so, nor do you need to subscribe to a particular TV provider in full you can just buy Sunday Ticket as a standalone if you want.
But if you're a diehard fan, you want to watch your team - that's when the NFL has you by the short and curlies and they know it. If you were just into NFL football but agnostic to the teams you watch, you'd put on whatever games are on in your market, and you can do that with a regular antenna. Ultimately, that's all it is - brand loyalty. And like nearly every other commercial entity on the planet, the more loyalty you have, the more incentive the merchant has to charge you for it - there is no brand loyalty stronger than sports fandom. It's very simple for fans outside of their team's market to watch their favorite team play.
